Fishy Drama 2

In this post I have some rough fish drawings. Here I was trying to figure what style to use. Originally I was going to just draw them as regular fish with some accents to them to help establish the decade they are in. I soon scrapped that idea for one that would better represent the time period.
The bottom page pretty much has a general idea of most of the "Jets" and the bottom left shows what I currently have for the leader of the "Sharks".
When I clean them up, my hope is to have them look in such a way that the viewer can get a head start on the personality type. Once I establish the look of the characters, I will try and compose them in story situations that will better illustrate their personality's.
The more I draw these guys, the more I want to change the general idea behind the story to one that is mostly about the lead character having to make a moral decision and changing from who he once. I don't know if that would be considered a coming of age movie.
We'll see.

Fishy Drama

Sorry for not posting this at the start of the month.
I am figuring for this month I would try and create characters that are fish. It has been done many times before I'm sure, but for myself, I am trying to build a bigger design vocabulary, and this months word for me is fish.
I plan on designing a small gang of fish set to West side story. I admit that I have not seen this film ,which is good because I might make some changes later on, but overall I will keep it in tact.
The main reason for using an existing story was to try and simulate the role of a character designer when he/she is hired for a project. I'll read up on the plot , gather some reference and hope, by the end of the month,to have created the main characters and maybe conceptualize some scenes.
When all is said and done, perhaps I could use these characters for a more original story sometime in the future.
I hope that everyone else has an opportunity to participate and if so please do not feel that you need to be locked into "West Side Story" story.

The Spainiard

Super rough sketch but it's good to get it out on "paper" anyway.

Lady Steam-Pirate Colored

So here is the final colored version of the Lady Steam-Pirate I posted a while back. This took a while. I got really carried away with the lighting...
