About Atomic Cardboard

The main focus of Atomic Cardboard is Character Development! The blog will function as a place for artists to participate in monthly character design challenges. New themes will be presented monthly for each challenge. Contributors can post any stage of development including concepts, roughs, cleanup and finals. Feedback is welcome as is any info artists would like to share about their process. Artists are encouraged to participate in the current theme and to ask questions or provide information about their designs.

Contributing Designs:
  • The only requirement of contributing is that your first design for any given theme depicts the whole character. The entire character must be shown from head to toe in at least one final illustration. That is not to say that rough work depicting cropped figures can't be submitted while in the development stage. Submissions of any stage of development are welcome. Just be sure the "final" design shows the entire character.

  • Once the main character is designed, you are encouraged to elaborate on that character by creating supporting characters, props, additional drawings of the main character, environments and so on.

  • You can post as many drawings, characters, or other elements per theme, each month as you like.

Themes:
  • There will be one theme per month, chosen by one of the blog's contributors. The artists who pick the monthly theme will rotate in alphabetical order.

  • New themes will be posted at the beginning of each month.

  • Themes can be as detailed or as broad as the person picking the theme likes so long as it focuses on the development of at least one main character. Additional supporting characters are encouraged, as is any other supporting material, once the initial character is established.

  • Character descriptions can involve physical, geographical, racial and environmental traits and include details like gender, comrades, pets, attitude and so on.
